Mariah Carey (Huntington, 27 marzo 1970) è una cantautrice, attrice e produttrice discografica statunitense. Molto popolare negli anni novanta, dopo qualche anno di crisi, coincisi con l’inizio degli anni 2000, è tornata al grande successo nel 2005 con il secondo album pubblicato per la sua terza casa discografica, con cui ha superato il primato di singoli numero uno in classifica detenuto da Elvis Presley, ossia di 18 singoli con il brano Touch My Body nel 2008, diventando la donna con più numeri #1 al mondo. Mariah Carey ha venduto finora circa 280 milioni di dischi nel mondo (di cui più di 64 milioni negli Stati Uniti), diventando dal 2006 la donna ad aver venduto più dischi al mondo con circa 280 milioni di copie certificate dalla RIAA, ma si stima che la cantante ne abbia venduti oltre 300 milioni. Ha registrato il record di più settimane permanenti al primo posto nel mondo cioè quello di ben 79 settimane, altro record è quello di aver passato 16 settimane al numero 1 con il singolo One Sweet Day ; questi sono record mai registrati, soprattutto da un artista particolarmente non commerciale, come lei.Tra i suoi maggiori successi ricordiamo la rielaborazione e interpretazione di Without You (1994), ma anche brani scritti e prodotti da lei come Fantasy, One Sweet Day un duetto coi Boyz II Men, entrambi pubblicati nel 1995, My All (1998) e We Belong Together (2005). Il famoso giornale TIME nel 2014, dopo un accurata ricerca, ha eletto la cantante come la più popolare di sempre dagli anni 60′. Possiede una voce caratterizzata dalla notevole estensione vocale (si ritiene che quest’ultima sia di 5.6 ottave), dalla particolare tessitura ed è capace di controllare molto bene il suo registro di fischio (nota più alta Bb7); I suoi testi sono nella maggior parte scritti da lei, a volte anche arrangiati, ed hanno grande spessore artistico ed emotivo. Oltre ai suoi successi commerciali, Mariah ha ottenuto sei Grammy Awards (uno di “minore importanza” per la colonna sonora), lei e Whitney Houston sono state le artiste più sottovalutate in questo tipo di premi; 31 World Music Awards (diventato record nel 2006, classificandosi la donna che ne possiede di più), e ben 89 nominations ai Billboard Music Awards, 76 di questi vinti (anche questo registrato come record) ed è l’unica donna al mondo ad aver ricevuto il The Artist of Millennium (insieme a Michael Jackson; si sono consacratii gli artisti del millennio). Mariah Carey è stata soprannominata “Best Female Artist Of History” e “Most Successful Female Artist Of All Time”; ha istituito ed evoluto l’RnB e creato un nuovo stile chiamato Hip-Hop soul. Mariah Carey è stata soprannominata “Queen Of R&B” per aver evoluto, rivoluzionato e reso mondialmente conosciuto questo stile particolarmente “Black”.
